Boski, Raw Silk, Karandi and Cotton: Which Fabric Is Right for You?

The fabric makes a big difference to how your clothes look, feel and last. Here are the most popular fabrics for Pukhtun clothing, and when each one is a good choice.

Boski

Boski is a smooth fabric with a soft, silk-like shine. It is popular for men’s kameez shalwar because it looks smart, feels light and falls nicely. It is a good choice for weddings, Eid and special days, and also for office wear if you like a polished look.

Best for: special occasions, formal wear, Eid.

Raw silk

Raw silk has a natural, slightly textured look with a gentle shine. It looks rich without being too shiny, and it takes embroidery very well. It is usually used for waistcoats, sherwanis and festive outfits. Raw silk needs more care than cotton, so dry clean it.

Best for: weddings, waistcoats, evening events.

Karandi

Karandi is a thicker, warmer fabric with a textured weave. It is a favourite in winter because it keeps you warm without feeling heavy. It also looks smart, and it works well with a waistcoat or a shawl.

Best for: winter, everyday wear in the cold months.

Cotton

Cotton is soft, breathable and easy to wash. It is the best choice for hot weather and for daily wear, because it keeps you cool and is simple to look after. Good cotton gets softer every time you wash it.

Best for: summer, everyday wear, Friday prayers.

Wool and shawls

For the coldest days, a wool waistcoat or a shawl over your kameez shalwar keeps you warm and adds a classic Pukhtun touch. Fold or drape a shawl neatly over one shoulder, or wrap it around the shoulders when it is cold.

Best for: winter, weddings in cold weather.

Quick guide

  • Hot weather: cotton
  • Wedding or Eid: Boski or raw silk
  • Cold weather: Karandi, wool or a shawl
  • Everyday wear: cotton or Boski

Whatever you choose, always check the care label and follow the washing advice, so your clothes look good for years.
