What to Wear to a Pukhtun Wedding: A Simple Guide for Men

A wedding is one of the biggest days in a family, and everyone wants to look their best. Whether you are the groom or a guest, here are simple ideas for each part of a Pukhtun wedding.

Mehndi

Mehndi is relaxed and colourful. A bright kameez shalwar or kurta in a colour such as green, yellow or orange looks great. Keep the outfit comfortable, because you may be on your feet for a long time.

Nikkah and Barat

This is the most formal day. Many men choose a well-fitted kameez shalwar with an embroidered waistcoat, or a sherwani. Rich colours such as deep green, navy blue, maroon or black look elegant. Add a pair of good leather chappals to finish the outfit.

If you are the groom, your outfit should stand out a little from the guests. Consider a waistcoat with fine embroidery, and a traditional cap, turban or shawl if it is part of your family tradition.

Walima

The walima is usually calmer and more elegant. Lighter colours such as cream, sand, light grey or soft blue work well. A clean, simple kameez shalwar with a plain or lightly embroidered waistcoat looks refined.

Guests: some easy rules

  • Do not wear white or cream to a barat if you are not the groom, unless it is a common style in your family. Check with someone from the family if you are unsure.
  • Make sure your outfit is ironed and your chappals are clean.
  • Choose clothes you can sit and eat comfortably in.

Plan your outfit early

  • Order at least two to three weeks before the event, so you have time for fitting changes.
  • Try the whole outfit on together: kameez, shalwar, waistcoat and shoes.
  • Keep a spare, plain kameez shalwar ready for the days around the wedding.
