Few things say Peshawar like a pair of chappals. Whether you wear them with a simple white kameez shalwar or with a full wedding outfit, a good pair of Peshawari chappals is a classic.
What makes a Peshawari chappal different?
A Peshawari chappal is made from leather and finished by hand. It is open at the front and the toes, with a strap that goes around the foot. A strong double sole and a flat, sturdy shape make it comfortable for long days of walking and standing. A good pair is worn by men across Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Pakistan, from everyday life to weddings and Eid.
How to choose a good pair
- Look at the leather. Good leather feels soft and even. It should not feel plastic-like or crack when you bend it.
- Check the stitching. The stitches should be tight, straight and even. Loose or uneven stitching is a sign of poor work.
- Feel the sole. The sole should be firm but not stiff. A double sole lasts longer and is more comfortable.
- Get the right size. Measure your foot in the evening, when it is at its largest. Leather stretches a little, so choose a snug fit, not a tight one.
Breaking them in
New leather is a little stiff. Wear your new chappals at home for a few hours a day for the first week. The leather will soften and shape itself to your foot. Do not try to rush this by wearing them for a whole wedding on day one.
Looking after your chappals
- If they get wet, dry them in the shade. Never put them in direct sun or near a heater, because the leather will crack.
- Wipe off dust with a soft, dry cloth.
- Rub a little leather polish or cream on them every month or two to keep them soft.
- Rotate between two pairs if you wear chappals every day. They last longer when they can rest.
What to wear them with
Chappals suit almost every Pukhtun outfit. A plain kameez shalwar looks smart with a darker pair. For weddings, many men choose a pair that matches the colour of their waistcoat.
